The Xbox 360: A Boy's Console?

Posted on October 4, 2006 by RPG Site Staff

I am a girl gamer. This doesn't mean I take gaming lightly, or that I only pick up a controller at my boyfriend's house once a year. It just means that I have extremely feminine tastes in the games that I buy.

I don't like scary, creepy, gory, or ugly things. I don't like sports, wars, or racing cars. I have never gone to a horror movie in my life and never will.

When the Xbox came out, I hated it. It was Microsoft, a software company that is reminiscent of AOL in the way that there are tons of long-time users that can't stand it. It was the ugliest thing I've ever seen. An aesthetically unappealing, unshapely black box with a huge green logo. It boasted games like Halo and Call of Duty. It turned Call of Cthulhu, a brilliant short story by H.P. Lovecraft (mind you, macabre in writing can be elegant), into a first person shooter that was more about guns than Elder Gods.

Just a disgustingly gory picture from a bastardized version of Call of Cthulhu
Just a disgustingly gory picture from a bastardized version of Call of Cthulhu

I was extremely biased against the Xbox by the time the 360 came out. Honestly, I couldn't care less about its new look. To me, it was the same old Xbox in white with a few curves. Unlike the other next generation consoles, this one has been out and we already know what it's all about; there's no speculation. We know its features and its games, and none of it is that appealing to me. It doesn't give me what I'm looking for in a system; it has all these superfluous options that I would never use. But ultimately, it comes down to the numerous games that don't interest me at all.

The Games
Let's take a look at the genres of gamine the 360 has to offer (courtesy of Team Xbox). I've omitted the ones that had no games in their category, and combined a few that were similar. An immense list, probably similar to the old Xbox or PS2, in the categories it provides. But what matters is the games in those categories. Before that, I'm going to scratch out a few of the genres that I would never touch.

Action

Card/Casino- I've been to Vegas so many times, it's not funny. I don't need a video game console for this; I own a deck of cards. World Championship Poker “All In”

Combat Racing/Driving- Fun for ten minutes, but I don't care about smooth rides, racing along tracks in circles, or shooting pimps out the window of my car. Burnout Revenge, Need for Speed, Tokyo Extreme Racer

Extreme Sports/Sports/Wrestling- I don't like sports, and I would never play them in real life or in a simulation. I can't think of anything more boring. And honestly, I can't believe wrestling has its own category. Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, WWE Smackdown vs. RAW 2007, College Hoops 2K6

Fighting- I'm not a huge fan of one-on-one fighting. It's fun in an arcade or at a gaming store, but when you're an only child without a ton of male gamer friends that come over regularly, multiplayer games like that aren't worth the buy. Dead or Alive 4, Def Jam 3, Senko no Ronde, Street Fighter II' Hyper Fighting

FPS- First person shooting isn't for me. I'm not a huge fan of multiplayer competition, and its for people who love esoteric gun types and mass shooting in war games, not people who love shooting an individual for personal reasons. Brothers In Arms Hell's Highway, CellFactor, Medal of Honor Airborne

Flying/Pilot- I can't believe there's a category for this. I don't care about pretending to pilot an aircraft on my television, no matter which world war you pick. Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWII, Over G Fighters

Music/Dance- I'm actually sort of sad that DDR and Guitar Hero switched to the 360. But there are so many games already for the PS2 that I already own, and my dance mat works fine on it. Not worth getting a new console for. Dance Dance Revolution Universe, Guitar Hero II

Party- I thought this would be like Mario Party, but it's some things I've never heard of that don't sound remotely similar. Everyparty, Fuzion Frenzy 2

Puzzle- There's only one in this category, and I already have something for the Gameboy that sounds exactly the same. Marble Blast Ultra

RTS- War games. That's enough to discourage me. Halo Wars

Simulation- The Sims is cool, but what is this crap that the 360 has in this section? One game is essentially a sports game, where you manage teams, and the other is about Pinatas, those Mexican birthday toys you hit that no one cares about. LMA Manager 2007, Viva Piñata.
Survival/Horror- Everything I can't stand about horror movies, but having to play through it. Just looking at stills from Resident Evil creeps me out. It's gross, gory, and blows up relatively harmless paranormal conspiracies to evil dimensions and grotesque creatures that keep me from sleeping at night. Alone in the Dark, Clive Barker's Jericho, Possession, Resident Evil 5

Another sports game that doesn’t interest me.
Another sports game that doesn’t interest me.

So that leaves Action, MMO, Platformers, and RPGs. Yes, I realize that all those genres that I dislike on found on other consoles, most notably on the PS2, but I don't refuse to buy a console because it has some types of games I don't like. I look at the quality of games that appeal to me out of my favorite genres. And I realize that a game cannot be disregarded by their genres. I can think of FPSs, racing, and fighting games that I love, but in general, this is how they are.

Action - Action is a huge, vague category that boasts a number of sub-categories. The Xbox offers Action with Adventure, Shooter, Stealth, Strategy and RPGs, only one of which appeals to me (psst, check the name of the site I work for). As I'm not a huge fan of the LoTR video games (just the novels), the only Action/RPG I would love to own is Phantasy Star Universe. Phantasy Star is a delightful series, since its DreamCast days. Then it moved onto the Gamecube and PC, without losing its online abilities, though that faltered at times. But, Phantasy Star Universe will be available on the PC and PS2, which I conveniently already own.

MMO, in my mind, is usually associated with RPGs, but here it's not the case. In fact, the 360 boasts MMOFPS and MMO driving games (All Points Bulletin, Huxley). God, it's really not giving me anything I want.

Platformers - I can't complain about these at all. It's hard to have bad things to say about platform games; they're entertaining. They're the games I started with. Not a whole lot for the 360, just Banjo-Kazooie, Sonic the Hedgehog, which it turns out isn't new, and can be found elsewhere. Platformers tend to be either for Nintendo consoles or on every console.

RPGs - I'm not going to say there aren't RPGs for the 360. In fact, there's a whole list of them here. Just because the RPG list is a bit on the meager side compared to the lengthy FPS list isn't a bad thing necessarily. It just means that there's less of a chance of finding an RPG there worth buying an Xbox 360 for. But first, let's knock off the PC/PS2/PS3-compatible ones: Final Fantasy XI, Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion, Enchanted Arms, Two Worlds, Bioshock, Elveon. This leaves us with Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect, Eternal Sonata. (Operation Darkness, Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom, and Far East of Eden Ziria I don't know enough to say that it won't be on the PC as well, but it's in Microsoft's best interest to make its games for both platforms) I'm sure they're great games, but I have absolutely no idea whether I'm going to like them or not. Of course, there are ways to predict how little or much I'll like a game.

Blue Dragon - Lots of Final Fantasy involvement, most notably Nobuo Uematsu. Chrono Trigger's on the list too. But the art is Akira Toriyama, who did Dragonball Z and Chrono Trigger. In CT, I wasn't a huge fan of the art and FMVs because it reminded me of DBZ. I could deal with the game because its graphics were vague enough to never remind me of that show, and its story easily won me over. But now, in this age, we don't discuss our graphics in two dimensions or 8-bits, and you can see in every second of the game that everyone looks like they're from DBZ, but with slightly different hair. Art can really break a game for me in the same way gore can. Books don't have that problem, and in movies or television, you can look away, but how can you play a video game without looking at the screen the whole time? Still, this has the potential to be really good, but I could be satiated just buying the soundtrack.

Lost Odyssey - Interesting fantasy game, but anyone who knows me can attest to the fact that I'm on a sci-fi kick right now. The art is definitely appealing, and once again, Final Fantasy and Nobuo Uematsu. Can't complain about this game or its story; there just isn't a whole lot on it right now. Kaim being sentenced to live for 1000 could be a promising premise, but I don't trust Japanese literature too much.

Mass Effect - Yes, science fiction! I'm also very impressed by the conversation system. Love the aliens and robots, but for some reason, they put all these ugly humanoid Geths in there. If they kill off all the Geths, it could be a pretty good game after all. And the sci-fi genre has some room for some beautiful alien weaponry and worlds. It's exciting. Don't like the look of the main Geth character, though.

Eternal Sonata - I can't believe they would make a video game out of Frédéric Chopin. That's disgusting. The entire premise of the game is horribly, horribly wrong. It's about Chopin's delirium just before his death, and having him travel through a musical fantasyland with Polka and Allegretto. It's a huge insult to his memory, and the situation is worsened with how ridiculously cute the graphics are. In fact, they're so cute and so horrible, I think I like them. But still, the whole idea of this game is sickening. Might have a nice soundtrack, though.

The Price
Everyone knows that the Xbox 360 can do a lot. But is it doing what I want it to for the price I’m willing to pay?

The core Xbox 360 was not incredibly over priced. It was $299, the same as the PS2 and Xbox at launch, and a hundred dollars more than the GameCube. However, it was generally accepted that the core system was not worth buying, and the real 360 cost $399, way more than I was willing to pay. I have never had the urge to buy a console or a game the day it came out. I am happy waiting for years until the price is reasonable, and there’s no base instinct to have everything novel and complete it before everyone else does. I waited for both the PS2 and GC to drop $100 before I bought them.

But I have to admit, a few hundred dollars is worth paying for something I plan to use all the time. My iPod cost a little less than the core 360, and I use it every second of every day and have never been happier. I just don’t see myself playing the Xbox as often as my other consoles. It takes me a long time to stop playing older consoles; I still pick up my N64 and play Ocarina of Time when the mood strikes me. Despite that, I haven’t picked up a controller since school started this year. I don’t have time for a new console in my life, especially not one that has $60 annual charge for Xbox Live when I could go a couple years without touching it.

Accessories and prices (including what the core 360 lacks, as of this)
20GB HDD- $100
Memory Unit - $40
Wireless controller- $50
Play and Charge Kit - $20
Rechargeable battery pack - $12
Headset - $20
Universal Media Remote - $30
VGA HD AV cable - $40

$312 plus the $300 core price that I might have been willing to pay, add on the $60 for the first year of Live, and that’s $672 too much. And that’s without any games. A brand new 360 game can easily be $50-60.

The Features

Online Play
I am a huge fan of MMORPGs, despite understanding that the vast majority of them suck. The only real appeal that has existed with MMORPGs is being able to play video games online with my friends, which doesn’t happen too frequently with multiplayer games when all the friends that come over regularly are casual gamers.

Games are more fun with other people, in the same way chat rooms have their appeal; inside jokes and playing with people you get along with is always entertaining. But most of my closest friends won’t be getting 360s, mostly because they can’t afford it. Everyone already owns a computer, and the most successful MMORPG parties I’ve made, with the best attendance, have been ones that are free to download and play online for the PC. It’s hard to convince all your existing friends to go out and buy a game, or worse, a console, especially when they aren’t sure they’ll have the time to meet to play it. And the people who get noticed in a MMOFPS game are the best players; everyone steers clear of n00bs like me. It just wouldn’t be fun, as opposed to a PC game where people I already know don’t mind picking up a free game to play occasionally.

Then again, I haven’t played online with any of my consoles for the same reason: inaccessibility, except to more hardc0re gamers.

Plus, Microsoft knows that its PC needs video games too, and since they’re compatible with the 360, it doesn’t feel too differently to me if I just buy them for the laptop I already own.

Xbox Live Arcade
This just isn’t a big deal to me. Arcade games tend to be pretty readily available over other mediums, especially as free flash games over the internet or on my cell phone. I would never spend money to play them. There maybe some new games, and probably more of them in the future, but to me, they’re just the same old thing: menial timewasters for a few minutes of distraction. Its online capabilities do seem nice, though; I can never get anyone to play poker with me around here, but Texas Hold ‘Em online could be fun (as most of the online poker sites are ad-ridden, or require monetary bets).

Gamercards/Gamerscore
Just doesn’t interest me. I’m not a competitive person when it comes to gaming. I’m actually really bad at video games, and I don’t have infinite time to invest in getting my Gamerscore up, or infinite money to spend on every game that has ways of getting Gamerpoints. I tend to buy games sparsely, but play them for years. Ranking makes things significantly less fun, because then I just feel inferior to the millions ahead of me in ranking. Then again, this is something that doesn’t draw me to the PS3 and Wii equivalents either.

Online Connectivity
The ability for the 360 to blog is more creepy than anything. I suppose it could be novel and interesting if you game frequently, but it’s just further testament to the fact that blogs are so poorly written, they don’t need real people to write them. I don’t think I’d get very much use out of it myself, but it is sort of nice to see what the gamers that haven’t surfaced in a few weeks have been doing with their time.

I can see the appeal of the Xbox 360. It's for someone competitive, who games for hours daily, loves online play, and enjoys a wider variety of genres. I can see someone who prefers FPS to RPGs buying a 360. I can see someone who likes horror and war games buying a 360. But that's not for me.

From now on, I'm going to delete any comments that aren't justified. None of us want to see "you deserve to die" on here, not in any way. All this flaming at Katie would be perfectly acceptable if you BACK UP YOUR THOUGHTS. You can't just keep following the crowd on this, actually give reasons to why you think that and then we could classify it as constructive critisism.

How about after we wipe our asses with Katies article we go bitch at Maxi for not designing their tampons with men in mind. We will take a clue from katie and make no mention of any of the other tampon companies, we will just pick on maxi cause there boxes aren't attractive enough for us.

  9. What was the point of this article.
    Shifty203 | October 6, 2006

I am sorry but this was just ridiculous. There is absolutley no point to this article other than the fact that A. You don't like anything but RPG's and platformers, and B. Your a blatant Sony fangurl. Your article did nothing but reinforce the fact the xbox 360 is the machine to buy. You go on and on about the wide variety of games but hound on microsoft for giving us that choice.

Being a "true" gamer is about playing a game cause its fun, regardless of genre. Your third paragraph instantly tells me that you have no credentials as a gamer and you are nothing more than a woman who likes to complain cause something isn't pretty or shiny enough for her.

You dont seem to like any games at all!!! so why bash something you actually dont like anything about...

You DO NOT SEEM EDUCATED (as some dumb person said), you are a FANGIRL... and you shouldnt be paid to write something with absolutely no substance, or an objective point of view...

I think the PS3 is gonna win this console war... but still the 360 is a kick ass system... and your cheap review only showed me why girls shouldnt be reviewing videogames or talking about sports.

You trully suck (or at least this article did)

Maybe you guys should all read the article and learn to post things that sound educated. Random flamings like post 40 should be kept within your heads you attention craving idiots. How about using correct spelling an grammar to convey a whole thought? The majority of the posts here (some of them are exceptions) are just spam and add no value to the article. This is clearly not what is intended when this website allows commenting. Take into consideration the fact that Katie is a person too, and learn to shut the hell up once in a while.

    Nice work Katie.

  15. A "true" gamers view?
    Zoinks | October 5, 2006

I was about to stop reading after you wrote "When the Xbox came out, I hated it. It was Microsoft...", but I read on, hoping it wouldn't turn out to be a fanboy/girl rant against Microsoft, and the XBox, or any console for that matter. But when you wrote "I'm actually sort of sad that DDR and Guitar Hero switched to the 360.", my fanboy/girl alert level just turned red, and had to stop reading.
A true gamer, as you claim to be, will never deny other gamers, to be able to play games, even from a console you found to be ugly, or from a company you hate. You pretend to like an Xbox/xbox 360 game, yet quick enough to point out that you already had a similar game in your console of choice.
I'm sorry, but your article reeks of fanboyism and console bashing, and your attempt to disguise it otherwise failed... misserably!

    Stiffy | October 5, 2006

This is either a loaded, lopsided, anti-360 rant without any purpose other than to bitch about EVERYTHING the system ISN'T or Katie's boyfriend just broke up with her. I'm going with the latter.

Too picky? She's fucking impossible to please! Gamers aren't this picky -- they just aren't. Invest in flannel, Katie.

    BYAAAH!

  21. Your article sucks.
Katie, Your no gamer, shut up | October 5, 2006

Wow. Dont even call yourself a 'girl gamer', the the definition of gamer right, you say your a game because you play games, unlike true gamers, we're open to all different type of genre's in gaming.

Sure, some genres arnt so good compared to others, but thats just an opinion, and some games are actually good. Dont you dare call your self a gamer, after call almost all the best type of games crap. What the hell is wrong with you, almost all genres you gave it a negative feed back.

"Waaa!!! I dont like shooters! I think the Xbox is ugly! WAAA!!" Quit bitching, the reason why consoles like these, Xbox 360, Ps3, Wii, make games such as these because tests and polls have proven that over 80% of the gaming world is made out of guys.

Why the hell would a company try to make a low sum of 20 % or so gamers like them, while the majority, 80%, hate them? Shut up, if you dont liek the console, you arnt a gamer, quit calling yourself one, and shut up.

    KornNickel | October 5, 2006

Your a gaming...your just very picky. I do think the Wii/gamecube might be perfect for you, but to breakdown your article.....you say some very interesting. First off, it seems to me that you enjoy playing videogames when the mood strikes U. Something you have 2 realize is your talking to a community that loves this source of entertainment. Check any forum from major videogame websites (IGN, Gamespot, 1up, etc) Your title for this article is a set-up to get bashed.

Another thing is you seem to follow what your friends do, and not be yourself. Why do you have to convince your friends 2 play? When the mood strikes play. I personally don't worry about if my friend gets Kameo or not. If I want to do or in this case play a videogame that's what I'ma do.

And XBOX Live is the best way to create gaming friends. People who are online the same times you might be online. People who would love to play the same game as yourself at the sametime.

To prove your picky as hell; and one sentence that set you up from the get-go was "I am a girl gamer. This doesn't mean I take gaming lightly."
I mean really....it seems like u like not love videogames. The games you like are great, not for me as I'm a hardcore type of guy. My suggestions for the 360 would be: Kameo, Viva Pinta, maybe Guitar Heros, Phatasy Star Universe, Blue Dragon.

And to tell you the truth it's a shame you didn't own a XBOX because at the end of it's cycle great RPG's did come out for that system: Jade Empire, Fable, Phantasy Star, Knights of the old Republic.

Truthfully I love the fact that your a girl gamer looking for her way. Try'in to find games that suit your needs. But your article is floating in the wrong arena. Your not going to get 2 much positive feedback with a title like that. I bet most people saw that articles title and got there war face on off-top(fanboys). Go with what you like but don't give reasons or mislead other female gamers about a system and it's features without even owning or playing it. Your dead wrong 4 that. And when the mood strikes.....zone out and game up.

i dont know this girl and i dont like her already. she says nothing valid or important that really makes microsoft look bad. and who in the hell wants those lame ass games that she's looking for. just to make yourself happy buy a gaystation2 and a nintendo wii maybe you can get what your looking for out of both of those :/ but dont forget that the 360 is the biggiest competitor for both so eventually they will have to follow the leader so all of those punk ass games that your looking forward to other systems having will eventually slow up to a major hault because people love violence :) and games like barby rancher just doesnt cut it babydoll, so next for all of that simple stuff that your talking and bring on the gears of war, halo 3,ranbow six vegas, and so forth and so on :) (KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK MICROSOFT WE LOVE AND APPRECIATE WHAT YOUR DOING FOR ALL OF THE REAL GAMERS)

I mean who needs a memory card if you have a HD? Pfftt..any universal remote can control the X360 or use your wireless controller *stare*. Damn, you are so misinformed its not even funny!

Kaii, if this is an RPGsite then write about. Don't talk about 'boys console' crap. Xbox360 Arcade is actually catered to women. Women dominate the small 'arcade' market, specifically games like tetris and card games. And, wow, Xbox360 supports that 10x over any other console.

Please don't pass this off as a 'boys console'. Cause Xbox360 comes the closest of any of the consoles at bridging the gap. Next time, if you are going to be a 'journalist' try investing some time into understanding the market a little bit more.

    Mr Invincible | October 5, 2006

After the success of the original Xbox, Microsoft took their tried-and-true strategy to the next level with the 360's. As of September 2006, 5.1 million units have been sold [to boys] (sarcasm).

  57. dumb
    funkysolo | October 5, 2006

I think since xbox 360 is selling is for a good reason....Now if you came across and said i'm not buying an xbox 360 because there is not much rpg support, i can respect that. But once you starting bashing other genre just because you do not like them is when you lost all respect. Excuse me for saying, I dont' like rpg myself because of the combat system, but i know alot of people who like them. I own a xbox 360 an enjoy it and alot of the games on it. The console its self has alot to offer and i think your math is bad....the premium system is $399 and you can get it at amazon.com with gears of war for free for a limited time..

  58. Overly biased and picky
    Jon & Brenna | October 5, 2006

Both my fiancé and I agree that you just don't get it. You're not a willing to actually give any of the games that fit your "liked genre" list a chance, so you just throw out assumptions that you wouldn't like them anyway. Brenna is a HUGE Live Arcade fanatic. She spends as much time playing Hexic, Zuma, Feeding Frenzy, etc. as I do playing COD2, BF2:MC, and Chromehounds. BTW, I have met some incredibly intelligent, talented, and (gasp!) beautiful women who play the last 3 games I've mentioned just as well as the boys. In fact it's great to watch them wipe the floor with 13 yr old thug wannabes and listen to their pathetic attempts to recover their man-hood. Girls that DO play XBOX 360 would make Paglia proud.

Which is fine, but WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH BEING FEMALE? If she is going to call the Xbox 360 a "Boys Console" for no other reason than because she is a girl and she doesn't like it, is she really making any sort of rational case for it?

If you want feminine games get a gameboy and pick up Disney Princess and Lizzy Mcguire. I dont play sports, RTS, RPG, MMO, Puzzle, Platformers, and several others. 70. Not gender related
    Anonymous | October 5, 2006

In the end, your original premise that the 360 is not a girl's console pretty much falls apart. All you're saying is that you don't like the console b/c it has a poor selection of MMOs, RPGs and platformers. That's perfectly fine, but it has nothing to do with you being a girl.

Are girls who enjoy FPS, fighting games, and "creepy" movies not girls in your eyes?

Your article has a misleading and irrelevant title. Regardless of your gender, ultimately it amounts to you enjoying only a narrow band of game genres.

  71. Good Article
    D1RTY FRANK | October 5, 2006

I think your assessment of things was fair. Don't listen to all the fanboys. Most games aren't designed for women and the game industry isn't all that open to focusing on games geared towards women--or hiring women. I'm guessing we'll see more games that satisfy women's interests soon because businesses are slowly starting to realize that its another viable market.

The 360 is an overpriced piece of junk for most normal people. You did a good job of showing the pros and cons of purchasing a console. Don't be discouraged by all the negative comments left by rude xbox fanboys. Keep up the good work.

  81. Um.. duh
    Anonymous | October 5, 2006

Just would like to let Katie and others know the answer to the mystery of why most games appeal more to guys than gals: they are developed by guys.

Most game developers are men PERIOD. Isn't it natural for the developers to make games that they would like to play themselves? Yes. If every game is made primarily by men and the developers make games that they want to play, doesn't it make sense most games would appeal more to men?

Here is the solution. If girls want more games, they need to get out there and work for the degree/experience and become game developers. Until game developers themselves consist of more than one woman on staff, games will continue to be made primarily for women.

  82. Nice article
    Gizoku | October 5, 2006

Some good points. I agree, the 360 is seriously lacking in some genre departments (RPG), and has more than enough of others (FPS).

  83. Hey now.
    Too Much Class | October 4, 2006

i suppose you would like me to treat you nicely, as that is what you expect all games to be. Some people do not find feelings of being scared to be a bad feeling, but rather a thrill. You saying girls dont like thrills or games that require hand eye coordination, is a lie. No offense, but maby you should change the title to Not This Girls Console. Or Ew Xbox. Either title fits this article better. I do believe you love to game and i wish you best luck with it, but im afraid if you like gaming on console wii and 360 will be the the premiere console for RPG, and yes of course also FPS Adventure/action and yea, even RTS. My advice is if you really think a lot of girls feel this way, create a design doc for a game that would be perfect for girls. then try to sell it to a publisher, i would imagine it would be hard to find a publsiher that would want to do so. Good Luck at any rate

The entire reason we write for this site is because we like video games, maybe even love them, and because we want to share our opinions with other gamers across the world. Katie has taken time out of her real life to write this article, and all most of you can do can shove it back in her face? I don't know about where you come from, but where I sit, there's a thing called the freedom of speech - and everyone's entitled to it, not just the gamers who consider themselves H4RDC0R3.

Rant over. Personally, I think that Katie's article is very well written and detailed. I also apologize for the minority of you who aren't turning this into a flame war, and are actually offering constructive critisism.

  85. No insults, here
    The Smart One | October 4, 2006

That's right...I'm not going to insult you. What I am going to say is that, from your article, you seem to be very closed minded and judgemental.

No, you don't have to buy a 360...You can hat Microsoft all you like. You can hate the Xbox, the 360 and every other product Microsoft releases. That being said, realize that it is extremely inappropriate of you to write, and have published, an extremely subjective article that is based almost solely on conjecture, bias and prejudice.

I respect your right to have an independant opinion, unlike many of the cretinous fanboys here. I do not, however, respect or agree with this one. I think you seriously overstepped your journalistic boundaries and published an extraordinarily irresponsible article.

I, for one, would like to see this fiasco remedied.

    ryu | October 4, 2006

awww come on guys shes a lady, we can be more polite than this.
peter moore spoke about how they hope to emulate sony and shift 100m units. well to do this they have to appeal to other casual gamers, i.e. the niche market. MS have done a great job of hitting the main market - real gamers, people who want great epic games in general. I do feel the 360 is on the way to becoming the new PS2 (good initial install base, ok price, good 3rd party support.) but to do that they need more, well.. dumb crap like DDR, buzz, and Barbies super fun house 2 :return of the magical unicorn princess.

  87. Untitled
    Ridley | October 4, 2006

With all due respect, the funny thing is, these are reasons she's NOT BUYING a 360. If she plays a ton of other games and does not get a 360, how does that make her any less of a gamer? I know a lot of people who love their Ps2 and play it all the time, but don't have the disposable income to buy the 360, which is one of the reasons she brought up. She may be picky, but so are most of us. Just like you guys, you're picky if no one likes the 360. Just accept the fact that not everyone owns the new Xbox. It's just not that cost-effective right now, and even I will admit that. In a year, it'll be huge, but right now, there's not much going for it. And I speak from experience, because I was there that night when the 360 was first released. I've bought accessories and games for it like anyone else, and use Marketplace daily, but other than that feature, the games haven't been that exciting. There's nothing that interesting going for it atm. Sure, you have Gears of War, Halo 3, and others such as that, but once again, those won't be big until Christmas or next year, when some of the biggest titles are released. Right now, the 360 is just a system with potential. PS2's launch lineup left a lot to be desired, and then got better. This is what the general consensus of everyone here.

  88. Hmmm.
    Wolfie | October 4, 2006

As an EB Games salesman I can say a few things about this.

It's all a matter of opinion. Isn't it?

Alot of people come into my shop and want a 360.. Others are waiting for the PS3.. Others want a new PS2 or Original XBOX. Even though alot of the games are now merging between brands, there are still certain loyal titles stick to Sony or Microsoft.. I'd have to say, if you can write an Article about the games.. You gotta at least know a few things, or maybe be.. a gamer?

To be honest.. Girls /DO/ buy games. I'd know, I sell alot. Her opinion counts as all of yours does, I like a a couple of the XBOX games.. But truely. I'd have to agree with her.

DOT.LIFE - where tech meets life, every Monday
    By Alfred Hermida
    BBC News Online technology editor

The women challenging the stereotype that professional online gaming is the realm of geeky men alone.

    Anja Maller, aka Vildkatten
Anja Maller lives a double life. By day she is a 26-year-old single mother studying to be a journalist.

But when she gets in front of her computer, she becomes Vildkatten, the scourge of the online world of Counter-Strike.

Ms Maller is part of a growing breed of professional female gamers who are shaking up the traditional image of a gamer as a male geek who spends hours in a darkened bedroom, shooting anything in sight.

"I have played computer games since I was a kid," says Ms Maller, a member of the Danish clan, DoMe.

"It was inevitable that at some time I would run into Counter-Strike. I ran into it three-and-a-half years ago and I just got hooked straight away. It is just so much fun."

  99. Why?
    Shoot_The_Runner | October 4, 2006

To be honest, what's the point of reviewing a 360 when the genres you like hardely exist on the 360? When the main genre that exists on the 360,the FPS genre, is the genre you hate the most? No sense, whatsoever.

Do you honestly think anyone buys the core package? Lawl. Funayness ensues.

So, to be fair, I repect your opinion, but you have no right to pass off this type of "review" if you have no interest in the system, in the first place. That's like a a fan of Rap reviewing a classic Rock n Roll album. It doesn't make any sense.

  100. Call of Cthulhu
    Kaii | October 4, 2006

I read the short story. I said more about guns, not only about. My concern is when games don't have enough to do with the stories to which they refer-- for example, the inclusion of Jack Waters as a character, monster designs, and titling it Call of Cthulhu rather than explaining its relation to The Shadow Out of Time and The Shadow Over Innsmouth, though I suppose I'm glad they didn't make it about the most famous works of Lovecraft.

But just the grotesque murdered corpses and the FPS style detracts from the genre of horror Lovecraft's stories better portray.. particularly the paranoia, madness, epistemological limits, and the undescribable.

I don't think this particular author adapts well to any other medium, but the video game could have been considerably worse than it was.

  101. Way too PICKY!
    Share Bear | October 4, 2006

Katie makes a good point, boys. Many games (Xbox's specifically) are, in fact, geared towards a male crowd and I think the female gamer population has taken a blow because of that. I remember not even receiving a gun in the game for the first 2 or so hours, and then it was about sneaking around, investigating, and avoiding being caught, rather then "guns-a-blazing" moments. But then, maybe I was playing the outer-worlds edition or something. Sure, maybe not the greatest game ever, but a good play, especially to fans of HP Lovecraft.

    1 It sucks

2 I hate it because its boring and makes me just want to kill myself

3 I got bored typing in my myspace and felt the need to bash on something.

  107. In response to AKBlade13, who actually asked nicely
    Kaii | October 4, 2006

I like MMORPGs, Action, RPGs, Platformers, and Dance games and some fighting, racing, strategy, puzzle and sim in moderation.

There are some games of those genres that I like on other consoles, but the ones for the 360 specifically didn't interest me enough for me to buy the console.

It was just a matter of eliminating, generally, major categories of games so I could go into more detail about the few I assumed people visiting RPGSite would be interested in, rather than discussing hundreds of Xbox games.

My favorite games are RPGs and platformers. FF, CT, LoZ, Skies of Arcadia, Spyro, Kirby, SSB(M), Metroid, DMC series. See the trend? I do own a Gamecube, as some suggested I buy earlier, and I don't own a Xbox or Xbox 360, as I'm obviously not buying the latter.

I would actually consider other next gen consoles, particularly the Wii. Obviously, it would suit my interests the most. But I would not be buying it this year, I would likely buy it in a few years, because I don't mind waiting at all for the prices to come down and to see what games are already out that I wouldn't mind buying.

But yes, I'm picky, and no, I don't speak for every girl or every gamer. And I said specifically that I *don't* pick up a console once a year, to the person that missed that. There are still games that I do like, and I'm not going to insist that everyone make games that I specifically like, because that would be dumb. I will just keep buying the games and consoles that do appeal to my overly selective tastes, and that's my right as a cosumer.

And there are some girl gamers that are incredible at gaming. There are girls who are incredible at sports. There are some girls that love gore and horror movies and blood splashing all over the place. But there are some like me, who don't. I'm not good at sports or gaming, but that doesn't keep me from enjoying video games.

    THis article is crap.

And to the poster "David"... Xbox doesn't have males or females in mind when creating their entertainment. They are just, in fact, creating entertainment. It's up to the people, male or female, to decide whether they like it or not.

Katie makes some points about how SHE doesn't like the Xbox and the community. all you people are doing is saying her opinion is wrong because YOU feel you are right. Some, of not most 'gamers' opinions are 'lol sony sux'. People take apart vid consoles and it's genres all the time, and get the same responses, much like you people are responding here, because SHE voices HER opinions about it.

Either take an opinion or two, or get out.

    PS: I enjoyed the article.

  114. You all dissapoint me.
    David | October 4, 2006

I agree with Kaii, that most games these days are geared towards Boys. And X-Box is one of the largest producers out there today that signs contracts and puts them on their consoles.
Kaii makes some very good points, they might be a little biased, but I am mostley dissappointed in those of you that call yourselves gamers, and are sitting here calling this person a retard.

I ask you, what is a Gamer.

Is it not someone that plays games, enjoys them, can hold their own in a conversation about the games that they love.

A gamer is not someone that loves every genre of game, knows every little tidbit about all games. Plays and owns every console out there in the world, that sir, is someone that should not call themselves a gamer. But should tell themselves that they will never, ever, experience the other things in life.

I feel sorry for all of you that have called this poor girl a retard and a non-gamer.

You sit there in your rooms, for 75% of the day interacting with other people that do the same exact thing, 75% of their day through the internet, through your games. And you will never, ever, see a real nipple in your entire life.

If that is what you consider to be a real gamer, then sir's, mada'ms, I take the title away from myself and throw it to the dust to take up the title of a Casual Gamer.

I appologize to those of you for my comment that actually made some intellectual responses and valid points.

    I bid you adue.

Most of the best new RPGs are going to be on 360, fact of life, why? Because Microsoft knows last time they missed that genre, so now they are making up

  119. Whatever.
    SpaceGhost2K | October 4, 2006

I don't whine about there not being games for me. I learn to like the games that are available. Otherwise, I'd be lamenting the absence of 2D arcade games like Defender, Star Castle and Berzerk.

My wife loves Burnout. My daughter is 11 and loves Lego Star Wars. Morrowind and Oblivion took 200+ hours before I got tired of them. FIrst, with games that long, you don't need a wide selection,a nd two, with games that take that long to make, it's not surprising that they made a version for PC owners as well. You can't fault the 360 for that.

It sounds to me like a Gamecube would be perfect for you, and I'm not saying that as an insult. Tales of Symphonia, Baten Kaitos, Donkey Konga (play THAT on the PS2), Animal Crossing, Paper Mario and a zillion more sound right up your alley.

Hello, I'm Yotsbia Yakimito from Japan. Your article inspired me to create new and accessible software targeted specificly at girl gamers. With that said, I'm pleased to announce two new titles in production for the Xbox 360: Scrubs: The Roleplaying Cooking/Cleaning Simulator, and Super Sandwiching Making Quest: Peanut Butter Jelly Time.

  122. Try Kameo!!
    Brianna | October 4, 2006

As a girl gamer myself, I know exactly where you're coming from and respect your opinion. It's an issue that needs to be addressed to game developers & publishers. I mean, it doesn't help a bit when developers take out once-promised female avatar customization features from games like Saints Row & the upcoming Crackdown.
Never the less, there are games out now that might appeal to you. Please try KAMEO: Elements of Power, a game I think you'll enjoy, especially if you like fantasy & platforming. You play as a fairy princess with the ability to transform into different creatures with different abilities. You also might wanna check out Viva Pinata, a creature-farming simulator in the same vein as Harvest Moon.

    Tha Yizz | October 4, 2006

You pick apart of every genre there is to gaming, and show that you are biased against Xbox because it is Xbox, nothing more. And don't stereotype girl gamers, because who comes to mind when you say that are PMS Clan and Frag Dolls, who play the games you hate. WHy are you passing judgment on games you have not played? This weakens your argument since it's based on you not liking Xbox 360. I guess this is some way to convince yourself and ignore its merits.

Youve said you hate every genre of gaming except for RPGs. You should call yourself a hardcore RPG fanboy(thats a good type of fanboy, like rock or rap fanboy not console fanboy).

I know girl gamers who play all types of genres. Plus if the core 360 is slightly more expensive than your ipod isnt that a good thing. HD gaming vs small screen media player to watch bridget jones over and over again and listen to music.........i choose Gears Of War and SM vs Raw 2007 and Rainbow Six.

    "Xbox Live Arcade
This just isn’t a big deal to me. "

so basically you're not a gamer... you don't act like a gamer, you don't think like a gamer, you have no tru sense of gaming history, you obviously don't like 99% of the games.... what's her next article going to be? 'Why I don't Play Games Anymore' or 'Why Games Are Not Fun For Girls'

use that girl gamer shit for stuff that means something not for posting up garbage.

  130. Read it.
    Sam | October 4, 2006

If you actually read it closely you would notice she wasn't bad mouthing the genres specifically but the titles that she listed at the end of each summary, in my opinion, the article was ok, bought up some intersting points and i know many people who would agree with your opinion on the Arcade and well, general features.

  131. Did I miss something?!
    ExTester | October 4, 2006

Seeing how Katie picks the controller about once a year.. I find it strange that you are committed to write such a lengthy reason why you hate the Xbox community so much.

Its funny, my wife sounds less hardcore than Katie, and she has a blast with the Arcade titles, and can't wait to play Lego's Starwars 2 & Viva Pinata.

I think it would be more ironic to hear what you have to say about the PS3 and such. Seeing how its 200 more.. But I just see this as nothing more than trash talking. PS. I used to hate Microsoft a lot as well, but Sony out did them in the gaming area for me.

  132. Not too picky!
    ImThaSpaz | October 4, 2006

Well, since I am in Katie's demographic (ie, girl gamer and have been for 18 years...) I find alot in this article I agree with. Though, I am a fan of the horror genre. About the only two she listed I dont love are Sports and Flight Sims. I did not buy, nor even consider buying, an Xbox. Alot of various reasons, the main being it was on it's first Generation. Microsoft hadn't done a console before.. So, granted I don't know alot about Xbox past Halo. But, the 360 might just make me reconsider. But not til it's ALOT cheaper. I will stick to my Ps2 for the time being, thank you very much.

  133. What site do I work for?
    Kaii | October 4, 2006

And trust me, I like RPGs. (And other genres, if you read it.)

god.... growt he fuck up and wake the fuck up... if you don't like a genre of games don't fucking play them. Don't sit back and tell us the obvious reasons as to why a game doesn't appeal to the masses.

You're str8 retarded and should have your 360 removed from your girly weak softy hands.

You remind me of what ten year olds would say when discussing what games they like or don't like and why.

  136. Terrible Math
    Major Frien | October 4, 2006

You also made a ridiculously stupid error in your math saying you need to pay $672 for accesories and the consoloe. If you would buy the premium console for 400 all you need to add on is the :
    Play and charge kit $20
    Universal remote $30
    VGA cable $40
You also overlooked that all of these items are available for about half of that price on eBay, and you would only need the VGA cable if you dont have component inputs as the premium pack comes with component cables.

So you actual price buying retail would be $470 and if you buy on eBay and forego the VGA cable the total price would be around $420, $152 dollars less than you said.

  137. OK?
    Bon | October 4, 2006

This was a complete waste of time to write and to read. I'm sorry but, how can you even call yourself a gamer? The fact that your profile says you "love videogames" leads me to believe that you are a fake.
There aren't video games for boys, there are no video games for girls. Video games are out there for whomever to enjoy.
And here's a summary of your article: You dislike everything BUT rpg's. Move to japan.

  138. GAMER???????
    Major Friend | October 4, 2006

You listed 99% of games and said you hate them. And yet you still call yourself a gamer. Seems to me you are much closer to a game hater than lover, and should not be working for any game site.

  139. You Don't Hate the Xbox
    AcidReign | October 4, 2006

You hate video games it seems. You listed virtually every type of video game, and then why you hate it.

  140. Dont like games?
    Eddie E | October 4, 2006

I will agree with clark that you do make some, SOME good points, however you also say that you are bad at video games and buy them sparsely. Sorry Kate, I respect the fact that you can wait months if not years for the right price, something that many gamers can not do. But I cant respect your foolish attempt at poking fun at the XBOX community. Until you can find a girl who DOES play alot of video games, and does like more than two genres your opinion doesnt justify your cause.

  141. Too Picky?
    clark griswald | October 4, 2006

Katie makes some good points, but she's also extremely picky. It would probably help if more women were in the industry developing the type of games women would want to play. However, trashing just about every genre is less of an Xbox issue, than it is a video games in general. Selectively ommiting games doesn't help the argument either, Marble Blast is the only puzzle game? The one genre Katie doesn't hate is glossed over to support her argument.
